Truluck's keeps clawing its way toward the top tier
By Dale Rice American-Statesman Restaurant Critic
At the new Truluck's at the Arboretum, it reveals a chain that has charted a course toward distinction and is steadily making progress in that direction.
To help set itself apart, Truluck's installed a water purification system to filter Austin tap water, which is then bottled and chilled before being brought to the table in tall, clear bottles.
"Small, New, or Offbeat Apparently, an upscale steak and seafood establishment is just what the doctor ordered for quality-restaurant-starved North Austinites. On a recent Monday evening (yes, Monday), the parking lot was packed, and the wait stretched on for at least an hour and a half. Thankfully, both the food—from rich yet not overwhelming crab corn chowder to the “exotic” catch of the day (swordfish, flawlessly grilled and served over potato hash and creamed corn)—and the impeccable service gave the people what they came for."
-Texas Monthly
“The restaurant industry in Austin has had modest growth this year—it’s up 3% according to the chamber of commerce—but you couldn’t tell trying to get into spots like Truluck’s, a Texan chain with it’s own fisheries in Florida.”
-Wall Street Journal
“Tripoli’s real ace in the hole is the group’s ownership of Capri Fisheries, a seafood distributor in Naples, FL.”
-Restaurant Business Magazine
“You might call the people at Truluck's control freaks. The owners of the Austin, Texas restaurant company are so committed to serving fresh seafood that they went out and acquired their favorite supplier, Capri Fisheries of Naples, Florida to form their own fishing, processing and distribution operation.”
-Seafood Business
“Acquiring their own seafood wholesale business in 1998 certainly helps the company keep good on its commitment to serve fish that’s never been frozen, including six kinds of crab sourced from all over the globe.”
-Flavor & The Menu Magazine
“Truluck’s is a reliably good place for fresh seafood in the Warehouse District. Recommended dishes include the hot and crunchy trout, bacon-wrapped shrimp, crab cakes and buttermilk-soaked calamari.”
- Austin American Statesman
"These giant, creamy-pink claws with black tips yield some of the most plump and juicy seafood ever tasted."
-Ft. Worth Star-Telegram
"Stone Crabs are 'fun" food: Served on an oval plate, ice cold, the claws came still in their shells, but partially cracked. The shells were a beautiful pink, tipped with black, and quite thick, so that handling them felt good. Removing the cool wet meat felt even better. Of course, eating the crab was best of all."
-Dallas Morning News
"Truluck's Do not even pretend to resist the triple-layer, dark dessert with its thick milk chocolate icing."

"The steak was flawlessly tender and intensely flavored."
-Dallas Morning News
"From a long list of seafood entrees-including things like grilled mahi-mahi and a lovely stuffed red snapper, a juicy fish that was so delicate it was a bit overwhelmed by its filling of crab meat and blanket of cream packed with roasted red bell peppers."
-Ft. Worth Star-Telegram
"From the appetizers, I tried the Gulf Coast crab cakes which were served with a homemade tarter sauce and a spicy Creole cocktail sauce, the two cakes were fried to a crisp on the outside and tenderly succulent on the inside. In a word, perfection."
-D-Lifestyle
"At Truluck's you will find one of the most unique-and best-priced seafood-in the city. But the other half of the name is steak, and Truluck's doesn't disappoint here, either. The prime rib is a buttery, pink slab, prepared with a hint of hickory that gives it a full-bodied richness."
